Forsknings- og undervisningsinteresser: (dansk og nordisk) sikkerhedspolitik, brug af magt og tvangsdiplomati (coercive diplomacy), civilt-militært samarbejde og samtænkning, freds- og stabiliseringsoperationer, strategi, samt NATO og FNs sikkerhedspolitiske roller.

Formidling: Peter Viggo udtaler sig ofte i danske og internationale medier om forsvars- og sikkerhedspolitiske emner. Han holder løbende foredrag om disse emner, har vundet flere formidlingspriser og var årets underviser ved Institut for Statskundskab i 1999. 

Peer-review: medlem af redaktionskomiteerne for tidsskrifterne European Security (Taylor and Francis, London), International Peacekeeping (Routledge, London) og Politica (Århus), Military and Strategic Affairs (Institute for National Security Studies, Tel Aviv) og fungerer som reviewer for adskillige danske og internationale tidsskrifter og bogforlag.

Media, public lectures and consultancy: frequently used by the Danish and international media as a commentator on defence and security issues; gives many lectures on these issues; and has acted as an advisor and consultant for several governments and international organizations.

Peer-review: member of the editorial boards of the journals: European Security (Taylor and Francis, London), International Peacekeeping (Routledge, London), Politica (Aarhus), Military and Strategic Affairs (Institute for National Security Studies, Tel Aviv) and reviewer for for several Danish and international journals and book publishers.
